[ARCHIVED] Over 80 People in Attendance at Joint Work Session on Plastic Reduction Ordinance

ForNewsflash

On May 31, 2018, a joint work session of the Town Council, Conservation Commission, Economic Development Committee (EDC), and Sustainability Committee was held, with over 80 community members in attendance. The purpose of the work session was to discuss the potential for a Town ordinance prohibiting the use of point-of-sale plastic bags. The work session was held as a result of the efforts around the topic of several groups within the community, as well as the work of the Town Committees and Commission .

Highlights of the session included presentations by members of Matunuck Girl Scout Troop 560 and 8th grade students from Curtis Corner Middle School. Following the presentations and additional public comment, the discussion included the results of a business survey the EDC and Conservation Commission had conducted, review of the draft ordinance, as well as the idea that should an ordinance be put in place, the Town should create an education and awareness campaign with residents to promote reusable cloth bags. At the end of the work session, the Town Council requested the draft ordinance be added to their next regular meeting agenda, so that the public hearing process can begin, required of all proposed ordinances.
