The Zoning Board of Review was established by the Town Charter, Section 4920, and its procedures are governed by the Zoning Ordinance, Article 9.
The Zoning Board of Review authorizes upon application where specified in the South Kingstown Zoning Ordinance special use permits, variances in the application of the terms of said Zoning Ordinance, to hear and decide appeals from a party(s) aggrieved by a decision of the Historic District Commission or the Planning Board, to hear and decide appeals in a timely fashion where it is alleged there is an error in any order, requirement, decision, or determination made by an Administrative Officer or agency in the enforcement or interpretation of said Zoning Ordinance, to provide for issuance of conditional zoning approvals, to refer matters to the Planning Board, Planning Director, Public Services Director, Historic District Commission, Conservation Commission or to other officials, boards or agencies of the Town as the Board may deem appropriate and to hear and decide such matters, according to the terms of said Zoning Ordinance or other statutes, and upon which the Board may be authorized to pass under said Zoning Ordinance or other statutes.

The members of the Zoning Board are appointed by the Town Council for three-year terms, in such a manner that the term of at least one member shall expire each year. Vacancies shall be filled for the remainder of an unexpired term. Appointment procedures are detailed in Appendix A, Article 9, Sec. 906.
The Board shall annually elect a chairman, vice-chairman and a secretary from its membership, and may adopt rules to be used in the conduct of its business.
