Community Recreation Center

Project Update

Construction of the South Kingstown Community Recreation Center began in March 2016.  Since the official groundbreaking ceremony, Ahlborg Construction Corp. has been working on site daily and there are now clear signs of the facility's footprint - all 29,000 square feet!  Up to this point the initial site clearing, excavation, grading, foundation work, drainage, and preliminary utility work is complete.  On October 20th workers began erecting the steel frame with the help of an 80 ton crane.
On November 2nd, Town staff along with the project architect and members of the Community Recreation Center construction crew took part in a brief "Topping Off" ceremony at the site. The ceremony, which marks the placement of structural steel at the highest point of the building, is traditionally carried out to bestow good fortune on the building. Workers and staff signed the steel piece before it was raised and bolted into place atop the Recreation Center framework. An evergreen branch taken from a tree in front of the Neighborhood Guild was placed on top of the steel frame representing a symbolic extension of the spirit of the Guild as a longstanding symbol of inclusive leisure activities for the entire community.

The Parks and Recreation Department can't wait to see the final product and put it to good use for the benefit of the entire community.  Stay tuned for details on the grand opening next spring!
